Exodus 17:12 But Moses hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.
Here we see a wonderful scene. God gives the victory. But He does so through His people. That’s the way He chooses to do it. Does He have to do it this way? No. He is God and He can choose to do whichever way that is pleasing to Him.
However, throughout the Bible, we see many examples where God chooses to work through His people. In this particular scene in Exodus 17, God is working His power through Moses. And it is in the form of Moses lifting His hands up. That’s how He is giving victory over the Amalekites.
But there is a problem. Let’s call it human weakness. We can’t blame Moses for his arm getting tired. His hands were heavy. We, living in our natural body, do get tired. And it is a wisdom to know and see that we are limited. In God, there is unlimited power. But in us, we are finite, limited and grow weary.
What’s so wonderful about this scene is that Aaron and Hur came to help.
Ecclesiastes 4:12 And if one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart.
Maybe God never meant Moses to fight this battle alone. He knows. He knows Moses can’t lift his hands up for the whole day. But at the same time, there is Aaron and Hur. Rather than giving Moses the superpower to have his hands up all day, there is another way God is leading for the Israelite to win the war. And that’s through unity and harmony of the people of God.
And that’s how God revealed His glory and worked His mighty power.
We tend to want to do things on our own. We ask for power from above and want to do the job on our own. But sometimes, we ought to stop and think, especially when things aren’t working out. Especially when we grow weary. Is this the way God wants me to do this?
We should ask, maybe, is God going to reveal His power through our unity and harmony as we work together? We should give it a try.
Father God, You are God and You can do all things in any ways you choose to. But it’s such a mystery. Your power gets revealed when we are weak. Your power gets revealed when we are one. Just as the Father, Son and the Spirit is one, in harmony, unity and love, do You desire to work through us when we too are resembling in Your holy love through unity, harmony and mutual partnership? In Jesus name.
