Psalm 90:12 states, ‘teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom (KJV).’
We can glean many meanings from this one short verse. But one important truth this verse tells us is about our finiteness as mankind.
If a person was to live 82 years, that means about 30,000 days. Do you live life counting your days?
When we begin counting our days, then we begin to understand our limit and ultimately our end. We are all destined to face death and the clock is ticking.
Knowing we have limited time, then how shall we live?
Paul puts it in a very straight forward manner.
In 1 Corinthians 9, Paul says “24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. 27 No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. (KJV)
We ought to have a clear goal and direction. But most importantly, the goal and direction must meet the Lord’s calling and God’s will for us. That’s when we are living our days in a most meaningful way. All other ways, our lives aren’t lived meaningfully.
Our flesh and our sin prevent us from living the way God wants us to live. How can we change?
Paul states later in 1 Corinthians 13.
“12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.”
Face to face is the key. It represents a restored relationship, proper relationship and that in love.
When we know God’s love, through Chris, and are reconciled to God, that’s when we can begin to live the meaningful life of making every day count. Knowing God and loving God, this we couldn’t do on our own, but God made a way through Christ.
Let’s draw closer to our Lord in knowing and loving Him and let His love empower us through the Spirit to live the changed lives in 2020!
